Near-infrared observations of water-ice in OH/IR stars

چکیده

A search for the near-infrared water-ice absorption band was made in a number of very red OH/IR stars which are known to exhibit the 10μm silicate absorption. As a by-product, accurate positions of these highly reddened objects are obtained. We derived a dust mass loss rate for each object by modelling the spectral energy distribution and the gas mass loss rate by solving the equation of motion for the dust drag wind. The derived mass loss rates show a strong correlation with the silicate optical depth as well as that of the water-ice. The stars have a high mass loss rate (> 10 M⊙ yr ) with an average gas-to-dust mass ratio of 110. In objects which show the 3.1μm water-ice absorption, the near-IR slope is much steeper than those with no water-ice. Comparison between our calculated mass loss rates and those derived from OH and CO observations indicates that these stars have recently increased their mass loss rates.

Dust and the spectral energy distribution of the OH/IR star OH 127.8+0.0: Evidence for circumstellar metallic iron

We present a fit to the spectral energy distribution of OH 127.8+0.0, a typical asymptotic giant branch star with an optically thick circumstellar dust shell. The fit to the dust spectrum is achieved using non-spherical grains consisting of metallic iron, amorphous and crystalline silicates and water ice. Previous similar attempts have not resulted in a satisfactory fit to the observed spectral...

2 . 4 – 197 μ m spectroscopy of OH / IR stars : the IR characteristics of circumstellar dust in O - rich environments ?

Infrared spectra of a number of evolved O-rich stars have been obtained with the Short-and Long-Wavelength spectrometers on board the Infrared Space Observatory. The very broad wavelength coverage (2.4–197 µm) obtained by combining observations made with the two spectrometers includes practically all of the flux emitted by the sources, and allows us to determine the emission and absorption feat...

Infrared Observations of Large Amplitude Pulsating Stars

Our understanding of large amplitude pulsating stars and their status in stellar evolution is briefly reviewed. The paper then describes the near-infrared light curves of various asymptotic giant branch stars, concentrating on possible evidence for changing mass-loss rates. The stars discussed include oxygenand carbon-rich Miras, OH/IR stars, thick-shelled carbon stars and symbiotic Miras. Fina...

Observations of Stellar Maser Sources with no IRAS Counterpart

We investigated stellar maser sources with no IRAS counterpart at the radio, middle-infrared, and nearinfrared wavelengths. A 43 GHz SiO maser search for 120 2MASS/MSX objects, and 10 OH 1612 MHz sources with no or a very faint MSX counterpart, resulted in 43 SiO detections: one OH 1612 MHz source, 2 near-infrared stars, and 40 MSX sources. Additional near-infrared J-, H-, and K-band observatio...

Infrared monitoring of OH/IR stars near the Galactic Center

We have monitored 102 fields of size 1′ × 1′ within ∼0.7◦ of the Galactic Center for 1200 days in the K band. Each field was centered on one of the OH/IR stars found by Lindqvist et al. (1992). Infrared colours J−K, H−K and K−L were also obtained. Periods have been determined for 80 known OH/IR stars, including 5 from Sjouwerman (1997), and a further 29 previously unknown long-period variables ...
